多年来，美国农业部的食品安全和调查服务部（ USDA/FSIS ）对包括润滑油在内用于公用肉类制品和家禽的企业的维护规定和化学品的经营入行调查，使这类企业在美国农业部（ USDA ）的检查下经营。众所周知，这项" 预先审批程序"，是决定食品级润滑油的工业标准。美国农业部 / 食品安全检查服务部（ USDA/FSIS ）的"所有物质和非食品合成物清单"是全世界涉及食品和饮料加工厂商的食品级润滑油的"圣经 / 权威"。清单中分类按标签 H-1,H-2, H-3 和 P-1 列出了所有的润滑油。
USDA H-1类润滑油，是美国农业部审批的真正的食品级润滑油，合成物允许用于与食品有接触可能的设备部件的润滑。
USDA H-2 类润滑油，通常含有无毒成分 / 配料。
可用于食品加工厂的设备润滑，润滑油或被润滑的机器部件不会有接触食品的可能。
USDA H-3 类润滑油指的是水溶性油，机器部件在再次使用前必须清洗和清除乳状液。
USDA P-1 类油指的是用于美国农业部的授权书所提出的条件一致的润滑油。这类润滑油不能用于食品和饮料加工厂。
USDA为(United States Department of Agric ulture)美国农业部的缩写，其规范管理肉类、鱼类、家禽类、蛋类及兔类之加工工厂，并规范管理饮料业、啤酒业、罐头业、谷业、酪农业、烘培业、糖蜜饯业、食用油、脂业、制药业、化妆业、宠物食品业。
这可说是食品级润滑剂的由来及标准。
从中我们可以看到，所谓食品级并非代表食用级，这是两个完全不同概念！食品级润滑油简单说就是用于偶然与食品接触的润滑油，不会对食品产生化学污染，但是不可以吃的。
