一般来说阻止流体径向流动的称为轴向密封，阻止流体轴向流动的称为径向密封。
轴向密封是密封特征分布在沿轴的方向的。如下图，红圈为密封件，可以简单的认为是O圈。红色箭头表示流体运动方向，可以看出是限制流体径向运动。
径向密封是密封特征分布在沿径的方向的。如下图，红圈为密封件，可以简单的认为是O圈。红色箭头表示流体运动方向，可以看出是限制流体轴向运动。
想象一个圆柱体，轴向是指圆柱体高的方向，径向是和轴向垂直的方向。在立体中，假设一个圆柱体横向放置，则X轴是轴向，和X轴保持垂直的Y轴 Z轴都可以称作径向。轴向密封就是指圆柱体的上下两面密封（就是两个圆形面） 径向密封就是圆柱体的圆周面密封（展开来是一个矩形）。
轴向密封考虑的是端面，径向密封考虑的是大小直径。例如，可乐瓶的瓶盖可以理解为轴向密封，它的塑料包皮（除了底面）可以理解为径向密封。
